Abstract
Medusoid cnidarians form a group of highly importance in the marine trophic webs. The diversity and patterns of occurrence of medusae are unknown in Brazil. Medusae can join together forming large episodic aggregates, and such phenomena can inflict economical losses to mankind. However, the factors that influence the life cycle - possibly causing population explosions - and the knowledge of the seasonal patterns are important tools to better understand the biology of jellyfishes. This proposal, under Biota FAPESP program, intends to produce an inventory of medusae species occurring at the Baixada Santista (São Paulo state), as well as to describe the life cycle, besides trying to recognize the seasonal patterns of occurrence and reproduction of jellyfish species. With the project results it will be possible to propose effective actions to avoid or reduce the economical losses resulting from the sudden appearance of medusae. Moreover, the results will strength the research line about jellyfishes in Brazil, creating the basis for future studies and attracting attention to the group among undergraduate and graduate students and collaborators.
