Abstract Web mediated communication and collaboration in many cases result in situations of misunderstanding and disagreement, which are due to design problems of mechanisms for sharing meanings and intentions. These issues create barriers for users easily reaching their goals and properly manage, retrieve and interpret available content. We aim at studying how people can express and recognize meanings and intentions, while interacting with web systems, by considering an underlying computer-interpretable representation model as support. Firstly, we propose to define a formal model, which accounts for the combined computational representation of meanings and intentions. Secondly, we propose to investigate methods to design appropriate interactive mechanisms for a smooth capture of people's declared intentions. For this purpose, the project proposes experiments with groups of users to understand how they can comfortably express intentions on web-mediated systems. We aim to combine this empirical ground with a methodological and theoretical referential based on the Semiotics and Speech Acts theory to conceptualize our original approach and methods. We will carry out experimental validations to empirically assess the implemented prototypes in real application scenarios. Through this, we expect to achieve novel design techniques, interaction mechanisms and computational artifacts suited to enable users to express intentions during different moments of the interaction, without forcing people to comply with complex technology-oriented solutions. Our expected results might improve the effectiveness of collaborative web systems by considering semantic and pragmatic aspects. (AU) | |
