Abstract Brazil is a large tropical country (8,514,215 km2) with 190,732,694 inhabitants. More than one of third of its territory is covered by tropical forest or other natural ecosystems, which provide ideal conditions for the existence of many roboviruses (virus transmitted by rodents) and arboviruses (viruses transmitted by arthropods), which are maintained in a large variety of zoonotic cycles. Members of roboviruses and arboviruses have several characters representing an emerging threat to public health worldwide, especially in tropical countries. Brazil is the country where the largest number of arboviruses was found in the world. Roboviruses and arboviruses causing diseases in humans in Brazil mainly belong to five families: Arenaviridae, Bunyaviridae, Flaviviridae, Rhabdoviridae and Togaviridae. Considering the public health significance of some of the roboviruses and arboviruses present in Brazil and the possible emergence of other viruses, there is a great interest to develop rapid diagnostic methods for specific viruses. The fast recognition of an infectious agent during epidemics may allow specific interventions that would allow reduction of morbidity and mortality. The DNA microarray technology is a new diagnostic tool that allows the detection of a large number of viral agents simultaneously. This technology could be very important in Brazil for rapid identification of viruses responsible for outbreaks and possible emerging viruses. (AU) | |
