Abstract

The painful experience is quite complex and is influenced by the sociocultural context of each individual. So far, we do not know how this experience is expressed in the indigenous culture in our country. Moreover, we have observed that health professionals tend to completely overlook traditional medicine. Objectives: To know the main pain complaints of indigenous people of the region under study and therapies used for the pain management; to check how health professionals work in the indigenous pain management; and to develop a booklet with information and recommendations for the indigenous pain management, based on biomedicine and cultural practices of traditional medicine, to be used by the health teams of the Special Indigenous Health Districts (DSEIs). Methodology: This is an observational study, descriptive and exploratory with ethnographic approach. A convenience sample will consist of participants in two target populations: 1) indigenous - of the Upper Rio Negro ethnic groups and the Vale do Javari - and 2) health professionals of regional DSEIs. To knowledge of pain and treatments available, an interview, photos and movie will carry out with the indigenous people, and a questionnaire for health professionals will be held.
