Abstract

This project involves the synthesis and characterization of novel polymer and oligomers of the PPV (poly(p-phenylenevinylene)) family and their application in devices, such as solar cells, gas sensors and electronic noses. The oligomers should be of the push-pull type, i. e., should alternate electron-rich and electron-withdrawing units in order to present low bandgap energy (< 1.8 eV), which is highly desirable for application in solar cells. The sensors for the electronic nose will be made by the deposition of thin polymeric (oligomeric) films onto interdigitated electrodes. The obtained e-noses, which should be low-cost and portable, will be tested in wood classification, Identification of yeasts, specially those that grow indoors and that play a role in the deterioration process of concrete and other building materials.
