Resumo

In a previous study patients undergoing bariatric surgery for obesity reduction have gone on to develop periodontitis Sales Peres (submitted). There is a need therefore to identify patients likely to develop periodontitis to monitor and treat the gum disease. Salivary biomarkers of periodontitis will be assessed longitudinally to determine response to bypass surgery. The study was distributed into 2 groups: CG- normal weight (n=30); COG- morbid obese (n=87). These patients were followed up after surgery: EB6- 6 months (n=55); EB12-12 months (n=43). Clinical measures of periodontal disease (bleeding on probing-BOP, presence of calculus-PC, probing depth-PD and clinical attachment loss-CAL) and saliva collection (stimulate saliva) were recorded at each visit (month 0, 6 and 12). In this study saliva samples will be analysed for by a proteomic approach (MALDI MS/MS) to determine potential markers for obesity. Since saliva samples have been collected before surgery it may be possible to discover a marker for susceptibility to periodontitis- something that cannot be achieved with patients already presenting with periodontitis.
