Abstract

In the 1960s a series of events questioned the lack of clarity in the procedures adopted in the design methods. The goal of this questioning was to make the methods more evident for the search for optimal solution of the problem. For that, it was essential to define the problem and guidelines that lead to the solution, making the process an operational sequence, the example of generative design systems. These began to be exploited, especially those using evaluation criteria during the search process, such as evolutionary algorithms. The context of developing computational systems based on evolutionary algorithms have become widely exploited by computer scientists and artificial intelligence. These algorithms contribute significantly to the search for solutions to difficult problems of understanding and problems that have more than one solution, and all of which are satisfactory. This led the architects to become interested in the use of this method as a possibility of the design process, as well as the optimization it was possible to obtain solutions which may not have been imagined by the designer. For this was necessary a specific knowledge of areas such as computer science and biology. However, the use of terminology, concepts and limited resources to those areas unfortunately became the practical application and dissemination of these resources in the architecture limited to some researchers and the academic world. Currently we find available in the market several digital tools that enable the use of evolutionary algorithm in a simplified manner without losing the efficiency of the method, which favors the resumption of this technique as a project tool. This will provide resources that can achieve higher performance in the design and optimization. Therefore, it is very important to develop an introductory material that can provide a theoretical basis justifying the evolutionary algorithms and describing how this method can be implemented through the digital tools in the professional activity of the architect and urban planner.
