Abstract
Bromelain is a protease, obtained from different species from Bromeliaceae family, and it is present in the pineapple stem and fruit and is disposed in juice and jelly production. This biomolecule is known for its clinical and therapeutic applications, mainly the burn selective debridement, improvement of antibiotic and anti-inflammatory action, anti-thrombotic and fibrinolytic action. Its therapeutic potential is poorly explored due to its physical and chemical instability, which prevent to reach their full potential of action, once it easily denatures. Thereby, this projects aims bromelain encapsulation (micro and nano scale) using polymeric particles. the particulate systems are able to afford better stability, efficacy and safety for the encapsulated active and have attracted the pharmaceutical industry interest. After encapsulation process, the obtained particles will be characterized and will be evaluated its release profile, bromelain enzymatic activity, stability, in vitro pharmacological activity and toxicological profile. Then particles will be incorporated into semi-solid formulations for topical use. Those formulations will be evaluated according with pharmacopoeic requeriments. At this project end, it is intended to obtain a formulation containing bromelain, which attends the stability and therapeutic efficacy requirement for human use. (AU)
