Abstract
The perception of time intervals is an important feature of cognition. However, the mechanisms underlying this process are still widely discussed. A key question is whether our central nervous system has a central "clock" or different neural networks have mechanisms that can estimate time independently. Professor Dean Buonomano is a leading researcher who defends the idea that temporal perception is a distributed process that can be performed by different neuronal networks. In this project we aim to evaluate this model by testing: (1) if different neural networks can be susceptible to different types of temporal illusions; (2) how neural networks learn and update the estimated time between two events.
